We Write Fantasy – Meet K.D. Jones

Hello! My name is Krystle, and I am honored to be a part of this amazing collective of writers. I have Southern roots, and I’ve been reading and writing for as long as I can remember. I write epic fantasy, retold fairy tales, and, soon, science fiction under the pen name K. D. Jones. You can learn more about me and my work at www.kdjonesepicfantasy.com.

10I’ve always been a creative person. Whether it was drawing or writing, I’ve always had art and storytelling in my life. Bookstores and libraries are some of my favorite places to be, and I’ve always been drawn to fantasy stories. Retold fairy tales hold a special place in my heart. As you can imagine, Robin McKinley novels and Disney princess movies were well-loved by childhood me (and adult me, to be honest).

I’ve been writing professionally for the past eight years. I’m entirely self-taught. My study of writing began when I had a recurring dream which later became my first novel. Soon as I wrote the novel, the dream went away. Haven’t had it since. I believe the universe has a way of urging us onto the right paths in life.

Over the past eight years, I’ve written over a million words and published over twenty novels across different pen names and different genres. I’ve written in romance, dystopian, and fantasy, and have written for both young adults and adults. I’d love to write some stories for children someday, and inspire a new generation of writers and dreamers.

My favorite genre to read and write in is epic fantasy. I love tales of magic and danger, romance and happily ever afters. Right now I’m reading An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson. It’s about fairies, one of my favorite fantasy creatures. I’ve always loved them, along with unicorns and, yes, vampires. (I never grew tired of them, even after the whole Twilight craze.)

I believe you are a writer the moment you claim that title. It doesn’t matter if you have a degree or if you are self-taught. All that matters is your willingness to learn, practice, and grow. I believe in not holding ourselves back with self-limiting beliefs, like “I’m not a fulltime writer, therefore I’m not a real writer,” and facing the world with no fear. I believe in not belittling our individual accomplishments—“I sold XYZ amount of books, which is nothing compared to Suzie Author’s sales”—because each writer’s journey and growth is unique and special.

12By joining this collective, I aim to inspire and encourage other writers, and to build a tribe of like-minded creative souls. Writing can be a lonely endeavor, but it doesn’t have to be. I’m looking forward to sharing my journey and knowledge, and sharing your journeys and wisdom with you.
